Learn More and Apply

Vermont Tech offers non-degree enrollment to students who wish to take undergraduate courses but not pursue an undergraduate degree. The general population includes:

  • A student from another college who wants to take a course but will graduate from another institution
  • A student needing additional credits to qualify for graduation
  • A high school student who plans to take college-level courses during high school
  • A person who is taking class for personal enrichment but not a program
  • Senior Citizen

Registration & Advising

Registration for courses is subject to availability and does not guarantee enrollment. You will not be assigned an academic advisor.  You must meet the required prerequisite for the course and abide by the same academic regulations and standards as a degree student. Access the registration forms below:

Search for Classes

If you’d like to search for class sections, please visit Search for Sections. If you have questions, please reach out to the Registrar’s office.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Non-degree students are not eligible for federal financial aid. Vermont residents can apply for a Vermont Student Assistance Corporation (VSAC) Non-Degree Grant at www.vsac.org.

Tuition is charged per course credit. Most courses count as three credits. Science courses with labs are four credits.

Auditing

Auditing a course allows students to take class without the benefit of credit or grade of a course. The course offered is on a space-available basis with the approval of the instructor of the course.

Note: Audit courses do not fulfill degree requirements.

Senior Citizen Discount

Any student aged 65 years or older may audit one VSC course per enrollment period without tuition charge. Additional courses may be taken without limitation, up to and including completion of a certificate or undergraduate degree, at the rate of 50% of the charged tuition. To be eligible, such persons may not take the place of full tuition-paying students in courses with enrollment limits. Course-specific fees, including Registration fees, shall be the responsibility of the student. All other student fees are waived.

New student registration is for first-time/first-year, transfer, and students readmitted after one year.

Registrations takes place the months just prior to the start of classes after applicants have been accepted and paid their deposit. Initial class schedules are tentative and may change up until the start of classes. Class schedules are available on Web Services (VSC Class Schedule).

Newly admitted students are automatically registered for a full-time schedule based on their placement, prior credits, and program requirements, unless they have indicated to Admissions that they want to be less than full-time. Students that need to change their initial schedules may do so with the advisor during “Welcome Weekend” and the through the first week of classes.

Web Services Basics

Activate Your Account

New students must activate their Vermont Tech IT accounts to have access to Portal, Web Services, and their Vermont Tech email services. Activate your account here and click on the “New User” link on the right side of the page:

  • Your college ID is on the bottom of the acceptance letter from Admissions
  • To find your college ID (and username) online, click on the “What’s My College ID?” link

Web Services has class schedules, unofficial transcripts, mid-term warnings, grades, test scores, graduation applications, degree audits (program evaluations), bills, financial aid, and FERPA/Privacy information. Take some time to look at what is available on the Web Advisor Student Menu.

Under the “My Courses” link there are classes that instructors have set up with online support; not all instructors or classes use this area. The courses listed here are not the class schedule. To view a full class schedule use the Web Services “VSC Class Schedule” on the Students menu under “Academic Profile”.

Vermont Tech Web Mail can be accessed, once you are in the Portal, by clicking on the envelope link on the left side of the page above the calendar, or by going here.

  • Select term (eg T18FA for VTC fall)

  • Click “Submit”
  • The class schedule will appear with meeting times and dates and links to the course descriptions and other information

Set Access to Student Records (FERPA)

    • Individuals requesting access to your academic information will have to provide your full name, college ID, and the access code that you entered

Scheduling Website

Each term, generic block schedules by program and major and general education offerings by location and faculty schedules are available here.

Other Information

All four Vermont State Colleges: Vermont Tech, Castleton, NVU: Johnson and Lyndon, and the Community College of Vermont, use the same online Web Services.

Academic advisors are not assigned until near the start of school. Advisor contact information will be available in Web Services under “My Profile” when they have been assigned. There is an email link directly to your advisor under “Communication” on the Students menu.

Email

After the start of classes, all students are expected to use Vermont Tech email or forward it to an account that they regularly check. Important information is sent to students via email only. Training on and policies pertaining to computer usage at Vermont Tech is conducted during orientation.

FERPA

The Family Rights and Privacy Act is a federal law designed to protect the privacy of student educational records.  The law gives eligible students, those who have reached the age of 18 or the parents of students under the age of 18, certain rights with respect to their education records. Students have the right to inspect, review, and request that the college correct educational records believed to be inaccurate or misleading. If parents/guardians claim a student as a dependent, they may have access to the student’s educational records without prior permission.

Generally, the college must have written permission prior to releasing any academic information from a student’s record. However, the law allows the college to disclose records without consent for official school business.

Students must complete an online form in Web Services that provides parents or others with access to their academic records and an access code for them to provide when seeking information either in person or on the phone. This permission does not include transcript requests, grade reports, or enrollment verifications; these must be individually requested by the student. (Refer to the Set Access to Student Records above)

The college may disclose, without consent, “directory type information” that is considered not to be harmful to the student or parent if released. The information considered by the college to be directory information is name; home and college address; telephone listing; email address; date of birth; major; enrollment status (full-time or part-time); enrollment level (undergraduate or graduate); dates of attendance; degrees and awards received; weight and height of athletic team members; photographs; most recent and previous educational institutions attended; and participation in officially recognized activities and sports. Parent information is not directory information.

Students have the right to withhold the release of any or all directory information. To do so, a written request must be made at the Office of the Registrar. It should be noted that if directory information is to be withheld, it will be withheld from all parties. A request to withhold directory information must be made as soon as possible after the start of term and will remain in effect until revoked by the eligible student.

For additional information, refer to VSCS Policies and Procedures, VSCS Policy 312 on the VSCS portal under the VSCS Public Info & Data tab. For technical assistance or to file a complaint, you may contact the Family Policy Compliance Office at (202) 260-3887, or om@ed.gov, or

Add or Drop

Students can add or drop courses during the first two weeks of classes. At the end of the two week period, students are charged for all registered courses at that point. See Catalog & Calendar Dates for details.

Withdrawal

Withdrawal from Vermont Tech is a formal procedure that students must initiate. Students who merely stop attending classes will receive failing grades and will be held accountable for tuition and fees. Students can withdraw by given written notification to Office of the Registrar.

Leave of Absence

Any withdrawals for medical reasons, a letter from the student’s health practitioners is required. Students approved for a medical leave of absence based on a letter from their health practitioner must provide a time frame for their return to a normal class schedule. The student is also required to provide a subsequent letter stating that they are medically fit to return to their studies.

Non-Returning Students

Students who don’t intend to return to Vermont Tech for subsequent term should complete a non-returning form at the Office of the Registrar or off-site campus site office and complete an exit interview with the Office of the Financial Aid.

Grading Policies

Grades are reported as letter grades. See Academic Affairs for details on letter grades and how they are incorporated into a cumulative grade point average (GPA). Grades earned in Continuing Education courses are incorporated into a student’s GPA.

Incomplete

This grade applies to course work that is not completed due to circumstances beyond the student’s control.   Incompletes can be awarded to students only with the permission of the course instructor. Course requirements must be completed at the earliest possible date, but no later than three weeks into the semester in the next academic year. Students are responsible for contacting their instructor regarding all outstanding requirements.

Audit

Students may audit courses. They receive no grade credit for audited courses and pay ½ regular tuition and fees. Students must contact the instructor for approval. The approval form needs to be submitted to the Registrar within the Add/Drop period. Students may change their status from credit to audit or from audit to credit during the Add/Drop period with approval by instructor.

Accessing Grades

Grades are available online on the Vermont State Colleges System Portal.

Transcripts

An official transcript of an academic record can be obtained from the Registrar. For more information visit our Transcript Request Page.

Access to Records

Under the federal Family Education Rights & Privacy Act of 1974, students have the right to review any of their educational records maintained by Vermont Tech.

The directory of Vermont Tech includes the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of students, staff, and faculty. However, the Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act of 1974 grants to all students the right not to have personal information contained in the records of the university released to any individual, agency, or organization. Students who do not want their information released must complete, complete a form for non-disclosure, available at the Registrar.

Academic Policies and Student Responsibilities

More information on academic policies and requirements can be found in the Vermont Tech handbook, available online.
