The Work Ethic Scholarship Program is about recognizing the people who understand the importance of personal responsibility, delayed gratification, a positive attitude, and, of course, work ethic. These are the folks we consider rock stars, and we want to reward them.

This scholarship was established by the Green Mountain Humane Society to honor John D. Bryant, founder and president of the Green Mountain Humane Society.  John established the Green Mountain Humane Society in 1989. The mission of GMHS has been to address the cause of problems that create the need for shelters and to remind those around us that humane treatment, care, concern, and respect for all living creatures is a responsibility we all must share.

John “strongly believed that everyone should strive to help others.” John loved animals and was committed to helping them and their owners. John was very proud of the Pet Visiting Program where dogs and their handlers visited patients in nursing/assisted living care facilities. He believed the visits helped “stimulate conversation and divert attention from the hospital routine, relieve anxiety and promote companionship.

“We serve to reunite individuals with the calming influence of animals.”

John was famous for taking his Llama, Lorenzo, to several schools, nursing homes, and the Veteran’s Hospital in White River Junction, Vermont.

Demand for Veterinary Technology graduates is strong and growing. Technicians form an important link between clients, their pets, and the veterinarian. Technicians work in the laboratory, pharmacy, radiology, and surgical areas and perform duties related to patient reception, assessment/triage, and client education.

At Vermont Tech, two full-time veterinarians and a certified veterinary technician instruct students in the core two-year program with support from other faculty and an additional full-time veterinary technician. Hands-on experience is stressed and students gain experience in over 300 American Veterinary Medical Association-required  procedures.

The college farm gives students excellent exposure to dairy cattle and horses. The facility on the main campus provides a modern setting for experience with dogs, cats, rodents, reptiles, and birds. Basic restraint and handling is also taught on sheep, chickens, and rabbits.

Students are eligible to take the Veterinary Technician National Examination upon completion of the program. Click to view our students’ pass rates.

Graduates of this program have various employment opportunities including veterinary practices, universities, pharmaceutical/biological research companies, diagnostic labs, feed companies, zoos, and government veterinary facilities.
