This scholarship was established by the Green Mountain Humane Society to honor John D. Bryant, founder and president of the Green Mountain Humane Society.  John established the Green Mountain Humane Society in 1989. The mission of GMHS has been to address the cause of problems that create the need for shelters and to remind those around us that humane treatment, care, concern, and respect for all living creatures is a responsibility we all must share.

John “strongly believed that everyone should strive to help others.” John loved animals and was committed to helping them and their owners. John was very proud of the Pet Visiting Program where dogs and their handlers visited patients in nursing/assisted living care facilities. He believed the visits helped “stimulate conversation and divert attention from the hospital routine, relieve anxiety and promote companionship.

“We serve to reunite individuals with the calming influence of animals.”

John was famous for taking his Llama, Lorenzo, to several schools, nursing homes, and the Veteran’s Hospital in White River Junction, Vermont.
