Randolph, Vt. —Three Vermont Tech faculty—Michelle Stearns, Meredith Roberts, and Mary Hill—have been accepted into the Vermont Nurse Leadership Fellows program. More than 50 Vermont nurses were nominated for the new program and the 25 winning nominees were announced at the Vermont Organization of Nurse Leaders’ Summit on April 3-4 in Stowe, VT. The program, which is supported by the Vermont Action Coalition, aims to prepare fellows to seek board and committee positions by outfitting them with leadership skills, career development strategies, intimate knowledge of health policy, and other critical information.
“We are very proud of our faculty and their nomination to such an esteemed program,” said Interim President of Vermont Tech, Dan Smith. “This leadership initiative is a wonderful opportunity for our nursing faculty to continue developing their strengths, which we know will be reflected in their work as educators at Vermont Tech and the impact of our students on Vermont’s health care system. ”
Nurse fellows will participate in four sessions that focus on self-knowledge and self-management as essential leadership skills; team analysis and facilitation; strategies for career development; governance as a key leadership opportunity; and understanding and using health policy, health care reform, and health finance as leadership tools.
The Vermont Action Coalition is part of the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action, a nationwide movement to improve the health care system through its nurses. A Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Grant, which helps states prepare the nursing profession to address the healthcare system’s foremost challenges—access, quality, and cost—funds the Vermont initiative. The program is aimed specifically at making more state nurses available and capable of serving on committees and boards, from the local to the state level.
