Water main break on the Randolph Campus UPDATED

January 26, 2018:

As of 3:30 on Friday, the State has notified Vermont Tech that we may lift the boil water notice for the Randolph campus. Results for water tests taken on Wednesday and Thursday this week were returned and showed no bacteria or contamination. Campus members are free to use and consume water without restriction.

Randolph campus community members are encouraged to remove and recycle any paper notices posted at water fountains, sinks and kitchens. Thanks for your help clearing away those fliers.

January 24, 2018:

Effective Wednesday, there is a voluntary boil water notice in effect for Vermont Tech's Randolph campus and the Randolph Fire District. Information about the voluntary notice in accordance with state protocol can be found below.

Due to the broken water main pipe Tuesday, there is a possibility that the drinking water supply may have been contaminated.  This could present a health risk to users of the Randolph Center Water System, therefore a Voluntary Boil Water Notice is being issued, effective WEDNESDAY January 24, 2018.

What should I do? 

  • BOTTLED WATER IS BEING PROVIDED IN THE KITCHENS IN MOREY, KEENAN, AND NUTTING AS WELL AS THE FRONT ENTRANCE OF OLD DORM AND OTHER LOCATIONS AROUND CAMPUS. 
  • Do not drink the water without boiling it first. Bring all water to a boil, let it boil for one minute, and let it cool before using, or use bottled water. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation until further notice. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water.
  • People with severely compromised immune systems, infants, and some elderly may be at increased risk. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. General guidelines on ways to lessen the risk of infection by microbes are available from EPA’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1 (800) 426-4791or the EPA ground water and drinking water website.

What happened and what is being done?

This Boil Water Notice will remain in effect until at least Saturday due to the State's protocol that requires two separate tests 48 hours apart. The water main was repaired Tuesday night at 8:00 p.m. and a water sample taken for testing. Treatment systems, including chlorination, operated continuously, even while repairs were being done.  We expect initial test results within the next 48 hours and secondary test results by Saturday.  Pending these results, a decision will be made to keep the voluntary notice in place or remove it.  State regulations require that we issue this voluntary boil notice.  For more information contact system operator Ted Manazir at 802.728.1264.  General guidelines are available from the Vermont Water Supply Division at 802-828-1535.

7:50 P.M. UPDATE:

At this time, the water has been restored to Nutting Hall. Thanks go to the Facilities and Maintenance crews for their hard work. Also, we appreciate everyone's patience throughout the day.

 

5:00 p.m. UPDATE:

As of 5:00 p.m., water has been restored to much of the Randolph Center campus. The College has every expectation to have the water restored in Nutting Hall by 8pm this evening.

If you choose to travel home, we advise that you pay attention to local weather as driving conditions are already being impacted by the weather in Randolph. All classes will be held at their regular times tomorrow, so please plan accordingly for travel back to campus.

Water has been restored to Morey Dining Hall, which will function  as normal.
