Vermont Tech’s Community Anaerobic Digester project presents us with amazing educational opportunities! We want to develop and deliver curriculum for a broad spectrum of our students and citizens across Vermont and beyond.
- Embedding information about the project or using project information as fodder for existing classes & programs;
- Developing certification training for anaerobic digester operators;
- Creating apprenticeships: certificate apprentices assist with facilities operations for six-month terms; and
- Developing a 3-credit course on anaerobic digestion theory & practice for our students and others.
Certificate and college-level anaerobic digester curriculum will be developed in modules that can be delivered in traditional, on-line and hybrid formats. Certificate training will be task, skill and competency based. Some certificate students will help to operate our digester during six-month apprenticeship terms. Apprentices will be overseen by two facilities staff members who will operate the digester, and will meet with faculty weekly.
College students who take the credit-bearing AD course will also have the opportunity to participate in operations. Students who complete the course will be eligible to apply for summer research internships offered as part of the college’s Summer of Applied Research (SOAR) program.
