Alex Northern, Director of the Fire Science Program at VTC, has earned an Associate Degree in Fire Science from Montgomery College, MD; a B.A. in Urban Studies and Political Science from the University of Connecticut; a Master of Public Policy and Administration from NYU and a J.D. from Vermont Law School. He’s also a ’04 graduate of the Vermont Leadership Institute.
The fire service is Alex’s chief passion. He began his career in the late ‘70s as an on-call firefighter with the Hanover, NH Fire Dept. He was subsequently hired by the District of Columbia Fire Dept. in the ‘80s and assigned to E9/T9 in the busy “U” St. corridor of the city. During his tenure at UConn, Alex was an emergency Services Dispatcher with the UConn Fire Dept. He now works as an on-call firefighter with the Hartford, VT Fire Dept. His passion stems from the excitement, camaraderie and service aspect of this calling.
His work is also his main hobby: in his spare time he builds models of fire houses, and his personal “Fire Museum” contains a wide collection of international fire helmets, model fire engines and pictures/badges/patches. Alex is passionate about the Program and has chosen a set of adjuncts that mirror that enthusiasm for the fire service and for learning. Alex’s moto: "set the bar high and students will rise to it!”
