In today’s global marketplace, a vast array of new products are emerging all the time and nearly all include mechanical and electrical components or rely on them in the manufacturing process.
The ELM program is the second leg of a 2+2 curriculum. The first two years of students’ course work follows the associate degree curriculum for either mechanical engineering technology or electrical engineering technology. Although the ELM program is designed for students completing Vermont Tech’s Electrical Engineering Technology or Mechanical Engineering Technology programs, the ELM curriculum may also be appropriate for graduates of other engineering technology associate degree programs. Transfer students admitted to the third and fourth years of the Electromechanical Engineering Technology program must have completed two years in engineering technology at an accredited college or university, preferably including electrical, mechanical, or computer engineering technology courses. The junior year offers courses in advanced math, science, and sensor technology, along with “crossover” courses that vary according to a student’s prior educational background.
Graduates of this program bridge the traditional gap between engineering disciplines via an interdisciplinary program that emphasizes problem-solving in a design and manufacturing environment where the challenges are both mechanical and electrical. Successful students are prepared to bring this broader understanding to the design, development, manufacturing, and technical support of emerging products, integrating and improving both the product and the process. In larger firms, this might be as a member of the design or manufacturing team, while smaller companies might assign this role to a single individual.
Students enrolled in the Electromechanical Engineering Technology program at the Williston campus may need to complete some courses on the Randolph Center campus.
The educational objectives for graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Electromechanical Engineering Technology program include:
- Having the capability to be immediately employable and productive in the workplace
- Demonstrating knowledge in both theory and application and analyzing, designing, and implementing electrical/electromechanical systems and products
- Qualifying for positions of responsibility and to apply project management techniques to electrical/electromechanical systems
- Demonstrating creativity in the design of systems, components, or processes by researching and developing multiple solutions to problems and using a variety of tools and techniques in their work
- Demonstrating preparation for lifelong learning and adapt to new and emerging technologies
- Continuing their formal education
A student with a Bachelor of Science in Electromechanical Engineering Technology will be able to:
- Select and apply the knowledge, techniques, skills, and modern tools of electromechanical engineering technology to broadly defined engineering technology activities
- Select and apply a knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering, and technology to electromechanical engineering technology problems that require the application of principles and applied procedures or methodologies
- Conduct standard tests and measurements; conduct, analyze, and interpret experiments; and apply experimental results to improve processes
- Design systems, components, or processes for broadly defined engineering technology problems appropriate to Electromechanical Engineering Technology educational objectives
- Function effectively as a member or leader on a technical team
- Identify, analyze, and solve broadly defined engineering technology problems
- Apply written, oral, and graphical communication in both technical and non-technical environments and identify and use appropriate technical literature
- Understanding the need for and engage in self-directed continuing professional development
- Understand and commit to addressing professional and ethical responsibilities, including a respect for diversity
- Demonstrate knowledge of the impact of engineering technology solutions in a societal and global context
- Commit to quality, timeliness, and continuous improvement
The program is accredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org.
*General Education requirements for this program include a cumulative 24 credits, nine of which must contain a strong writing component. Some of these credits may have been earned in previous degree studies.Three of these credits are included in ELM 4701 and ELM 4702 and three credits must be at the 3000 level.
Engineering Technology Scholarship
An annual scholarship for students who qualify, based on admission to the college, cumulative grade point average, non-VT residency, and intended major in any of Vermont Tech's Engineering Technology degree programs.

Percent Job and Advanced Education Placement Rate in Electromechanical Engineering Technology
Vermont Tech Electromechanical Engineering Technology student outcomes are strong. The class of 2016 had a 100% job and advanced placement rate within six months of graduation. Many students have internships while they’re in college that lead to full-time employment after graduation.
