Introduction to Materials Science & Engineering

Course Number:
MEC 1040
Semester:
Spring
Subject:
Mechanical Engineering Technology (MEC)
Credits
3.00

This course introduces the nature and properties of materials that are used in engineering applications. Materials are studied from the perspective of properties, processing, and structure and how they are interrelated. Topics common to all materials are covered including crystalline structure, mechanical behavior, and property testing. Topics related to metals are studied extensively including defects, phase formation, heat treating, the steel system, and alloy systems. The properties and structure of ceramics, polymers, and composites are also covered..

2 hours of lecture, 3 hours lab per week
