Dustin Hill

“The most important memories are not typically found in the classroom, but in molding friendships and relationships that will last a lifetime.”

At Vermont Tech, Dustin learned how to better manage his time, a skill that has benefited him in his career. This native Vermonter transferred to the Vermont Academy of Science and Technology from his local tech center. At VAST, high school seniors can choose a major, which can help them complete their college degree a year quicker.

Dustin graduated from Vermont Tech in 2016, with an associate’s degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering Technology. He now works in the VTrans Materials and Research Lab as a technician, running the cement, polymer and bolts labs. There, he prepares and tests concrete samples for durability and structural integrity.

Dustin discovered VTrans at the Vermont Tech Spring Career Fair.

“Job fairs help the employer-employee relationship and offer a formal way to make a lasting first impression.” Says Dustin.

Dustin chose Vermont Tech for the strong sense of understanding that comes from a hands-on approach to education, which separates Vermont Tech graduates from the others in their fields. Despite being the youngest in his lab, Dustin got enough experience during school to start out higher on the totem pole in his career.

“When I go to concrete plants the operators are shocked by my role, being so young in the construction field. It has made it clear to me that a degree from Vermont Tech is like gold on a resume.”

He remembers school fondly, “The faculty is very knowledgeable and most importantly care about each student.”

One of his favorite memories was being able to assist his fellow students.

Dustin encourages students to ask for help if they need it.

“During my second year, I was honored to give back by being a mentor for two students.” Dustin helped them succeed academically in English and instilling positive attitudes that extend beyond academics.

“We all have second thoughts of what could have been if we perused a different path, but looking back I’ve realized that my Vermont Tech degree has placed me ahead of the curve in my field.”

In his spare time,  you can find Dustin enjoying music festivals, playing video games, or playing sports.
