Placement Tests
All entering students at Vermont Technical College are required to take the academic placement tests, known as the Accuplacer tests, with the exception of applicants who have taken them from another Vermont State College or if the applicant has approved transfer credit in Math and English.
Students are tested in English Composition, Algebra, and either Arithmetic or College Math (Calculus-Readiness). The math tests are multiple choice. The English Composition test requires an essay of 300 - 500 words.
The results of the Mathematics tests, along with school transcripts, will help the Placement Committee determine the appropriate level Math and Science courses that students will need. If Mathematical skills are a little rusty, students may want to do some reviewing with the following sample math questions. No calculators are permitted during the test.
The results of the English essay will be the sole determinate of a student's English placement; therefore, it is important to use the full time allotted to help achieve the best results. Also, be sure to practice with the following sample English questions.
Accommodations will be provided to any documented student with a disability and are arranged by contacting the college's Director of Disability Services at (802) 728-1278. Requests for accommodations must be made at least two weeks in advance of the test date.
