Allow us to introduce: Joy MacVey
Equine Studies Class of 2011
Joy MacVey comes to Vermont Tech via a roundabout path that led from Iowa to Vermont. Her interest in horses began when she was two years old and rode her first horse. When she was eleven years old, she began taking weekly lessons; coincidentally, at the same time she began begging her parents for a horse of her own!
Joy's love of horses continued without weakening over the years, and in the summer of 2006 she began a year-long apprenticeship at the University of Vermont Morgan Horse Farm. There she learned about breeding practices, driving, riding saddleseat, and general horse care. In April Joy went to Everything Equine, Vermont's largest equine event that features vendors, demonstrations, and performances. While there, she learned about Vermont Tech's new Equine Studies program and decided to apply.
Joy's future plans include next year bringing her new Morgan mare to Rough Terrain Farm, where the Equine Studies program is housed, in order to work with her daily. She also plans to continue to work with Morgans, a breed that has captured her heart.
