Diesel Power Technology
Degree Offered
Associate in Applied Science
Description of Program
The Diesel Power Technology program provides training for technicians to service agricultural, earthmoving and heavy-duty truck equipment. Academically, the program is modeled after the Automotive Technology program with an emphasis on basic mechanical and electronics diagnostic and repair skill training and a blend of English, mathematics, physics, business and general education courses.
The program prepares graduates for careers as entry-level diesel technicians in the agricultural, earthmoving equipment and heavy-duty truck industries. Job categories include general repair technician, parts professional, service advisor, and, with experience, service manager. Self-employment is also a viable option with the small business course included in the curriculum.
Demand for Diesel Technicians remains strong, especially in agricultural areas like Vermont. The average hourly wage for a Diesel Technician in Vermont is $15.55. Typical wages range from $12 to $25+ per hour.
The curriculum uses the NATEF (National Technician's Education Foundation) and Associated Equipment Distributors mastery specifications to assess successful learning outcomes and will include the Vermont State College's graduation standards.
Course Delivery
Diesel Power Technology will primarily be delivered in collaboration with the Hannaford Career Center in Middlebury, Vermont. Students also will receive classroom instruction at Vermont Tech's Williston campus.
