Possible Corrective Action Steps

The sequence and utilization of the following corrective steps is a guideline, not a rigid requirement. Each case is considered individually based on the facts and circumstances involved and on the student's past performance. The instructor reserves the discretion to choose whatever discipline(s) is deemed appropriate in any set of circumstances.

1. Written Warning

A letter of understanding is given in the form of a memo or document regarding poor performance or violation(s) of guidelines, policies or regulations. This memo and action plan will be documented and signed by the instructor and the student.

2. Oral Counseling

A meeting will be scheduled to discuss poor performance or violation(s) of guidelines, policies or regulations. Actions to remedy the situation will be discussed. This discussion and action plan will be documented and signed by the instructor and the student.

3. Suspension

A student is removed from the class, lab, or clinical setting for one or more days when a serious problem occurs or as part of a progressive corrective action for serious policy violations. This time of suspension is considered time absent from class, lab, or clinical and is included in the number of absences for the semester. All policies regarding number of absences and grade deduction apply to suspended time.

4. Program Dismissal

Dismissal is undertaken when a series of corrective actions have failed to resolve performance problem(s) or when in the opinion of the Director of Clinical Education and Program Director a problem is so severe that dismissal is appropriate.

5. Re-Admission After Dismissal from the Respiratory Therapy Program

Any student, who has been dismissed for unsatisfactory behavior, and would like to request readmission to the Vermont Tech respiratory therapy program, will submit this request in writing to the Respiratory Therapy Program Director. Such a letter should discuss action taken by the student to alleviate or correct the problem that lead to dismissal from the program. All students‘ petitions will be presented to the Director of Clinical Education and the Program Director for consideration. The Director of Clinical Education and the Program Director will discuss the issue, and make a recommendation to the Dean of Academic Affairs. The student will be notified of this recommendation by letter.

Additional criteria related to readmission after program dismissal is as follows:
  • No student will be readmitted to the program more than once.
  • No student who was dismissed from the respiratory therapy program for unsafe clinical performance will be readmitted.
