Services for Students with Disabilities

Robin Goodall, Learning Specialist
Conant 224

Students with documented disabilities may be eligible for reasonable accommodations, arranged through the Learning Specialist in Conant 224. Students with learning, physical, or psychological disabilities are encouraged to identify their disability to the Learning Specialist as early in the semester as possible, as the provision of accommodations may affect your academic performance. Common accommodations include, but are not limited to, extended time on tests, reduced course loads, use of a tape recorder for lectures, and oral exams. All information regarding a student‘s disability is kept in strict confidence and is never entered in a student‘s academic record. Other available services include: academic counseling, student support groups, assistive technology, and assistance in obtaining auxiliary aids such as alternative texts or interpreters.

Service Dogs at Vermont Technical College

Vermont Technical College supports the use of individually trained service dogs, as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act, for the benefit of individuals with documented disabilities. All service dogs must be registered with the Coordinator of Disability Services.

Individually trained service dogs may reside in a residence hall in the room of their owner who is solely responsible for the animals‘ behavior and sanitary conditions. Any damage caused by a service dog will be billed to the owner as per VTC Policy 611.*

Service dogs in classroom, labs and other learning environments must be under the control of the owner at all times. Owners should respect the rights of others in the learning setting by ensuring that the dog is not disruptive. Disruptive dogs will be prohibited from being in learning environments.

In all other campus settings, owners must abide by the provisions of VTC Policy 611 as they relate to their service dogs. Service dogs are prohibited from kitchens and food preparation areas, utility rooms and hazardous service areas.

For students in nursing and allied health clinical settings, please contact the clinic for their policy as it relates to service dogs.
