Mechanical Engineering Technology

Students in the Mechanical Engineering Technology program gain the knowledge, problem-solving abilities, and hands-on skills to succeed in a career in the manufacturing, design, specification, installation, testing, operation, maintenance, sales, or documentation of mechanical systems. Students develop analytical skills in the science and engineering of mechanical technology: materials and strength; statics and dynamics; mechanisms; fluids; and thermal systems. In addition there is a significant study and application of manufacturing processes including computer-based technology and rapid prototyping. Mechanical design and communication is another central component of the program.

Program graduates acquire skills in solid modeling and design communication and are prepared to transform creative ideas into robust designs rooted in science and engineering.

Mechanical engineering technicians provide an indispensable link between professional engineers involved with research, design, and development and the skilled craftspeople who manufacture and assemble the high technology devices. Recognizing the importance of teamwork and communication skills, students in this program gain valuable knowledge through project-based learning and other courses to develop the skills needed to effectively form a link between professional engineers and skilled production workers and to assist engineers to design, develop, and manufacture industrial machinery and consumer products.

Graduates of the program typically pursue employment opportunities as mechanical engineering technicians with companies in such fields as plastics manufacturing, energy technology, semiconductor manufacturing, aerospace engineering, and general production and manufacturing. Graduates of the program are also well prepared for admission to Vermont Tech's bachelorís program in Electromechanical Engineering Technology.
