How It Works

Once hired, you will receive an Apprenticeship License from the Vermont Department of Education (DOE). This is a temporary license for the three years. During this time you must complete all the requirements of a Technical Education Professional Development Plan and the requirements of the DOE Level I Educator License with the help and support of this Program.

The Career & Technical Teacher Education Program is an approved certificate program at Vermont Tech and consists of 24 undergraduate credits earned by completing the following courses.

EDU 2051/EDU 2052 Teaching Methods I
EDU 2061/EDU 2062 Teaching Methods II

12 credits:
2 weeks in August before teaching, fall and spring semester of your first year; and 2 weeks during the summer after your first year.

EDU 2135: Instruction for Students with Special Needs
3 credits taken during the fall of your 2nd year teaching
PSY-2110: Educational Psychology
3 credits taken during the spring of your 2nd year teaching
EDU 2802: Education Externship
1 credit observation course taken during the spring of your 2nd year
EDU-2115: Issues and Trends in Technical Education
3 credits taken during the fall of your 3rd year
EDU 3550: Technology in the Classroom
1 credit taken during the spring of your 3rd year teaching
EDU 2710: Capstone Portfolio
1 credit taken during the spring of your 3rd year teaching

If you have college credits, a transcript review will be conducted to determine if you have credits that can transfer into the program.

In additional to completing this program, to apply for a Level 1 Educator License, you will need to have:
  1. Passing scores on the Praxis I tests or have qualifying SAT, GRE, or ACT scores. The Praxis I Academic Skills Assessment is designed to assess candidates' level of knowledge and skills in the basic skill areas of reading, writing, and mathematics. If you need additional assistance, we will help you find remedial courses. For more information, see the DOE's brochure about the Praxis.

  2. An associate's degree or its equivalent (48 credits).

Patti Coultas, Director

Patti has been Director of the Program since July 2009. She came to the program with 13 years of combined experience as the assistant director for adult education for the Green Mountain Technology and Career Center; the program coordinator for the Lamoille Area Professional Development Academy (LAPDA), which is the central Vermont education service agency that provides teacher professional development; and the coordinator for the School-To-Work initiative in the Lamoille Valley. She has been an instructor at the Community College of Vermont and taught graduate level courses for LAPDA. She also worked in state government and as the materials manager for a small Vermont manufacturing company. She earned her B.A. from Appalachian State University. After a year of postbaccalaureate study at the University of Stockholm in Sweden, she earned her M.A. at Florida State University.
