The Putnam Memorial School of Nursing was established in 1946 by the Board of Corporators of the former Putnam Memorial Hospital, now known as Southwestern Vermont Medical Center. It was the eighth school of Practical Nursing in the country to be accredited by the National Association for Practical Nurse Education and Service. The Practical Nursing (PN) Certificate Program, currently accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, Inc. continues to be offered at its new site, located in downtown Bennington at 210 South Street.
In the Fall of 1997, Vermont Technical College enrolled its first class of Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) students to the Bennington area, in response to the community’s need for Registered Nurses. Both the PN Certificate and the ADN programs were offered at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center campus, until August, 2012. At that time, the College, recognizing the need for a larger campus with modern facilities, renovated two floors of a historic building in downtown Bennington. Both nursing programs are now offered in this spacious, modern facility.
