Decision Process

Admission to Vermont Technical College is determined after careful consideration of all the information that comprises a completed applicant's file:
  • secondary and/or postsecondary transcripts, including course levels and grades

  • standardized test results such as SATs or ACTs

  • letters of recommendation

  • extra-curricula activities

Vermont Tech has basic entry requirements for each program; however, the Admissions Office reviews each applicant on an individual basis.

Types of Decisions

There are five possible decisions that may come from the Admissions Office.
  • Straight Acceptance - A straight acceptance means that you have been accepted for direct admission to a two-year or four-year degree program.

  • Provisional Acceptance - A provision is a condition that must be met before an applicant is fully accepted. For example, a student might be accepted with the provision that he or she successfully complete a summer math course before the fall semester. Or another provision might require a student to take the Vermont Tech Placement Tests to determine if additional course work is required. If the contingency is not met, the original acceptance may be withdrawn.

  • Engineering Technology Foundations Track - If the evaluation of your application and transcripts indicates that you have the ability to succeed at Vermont Tech, but you need additional course work to prepare you for some of the courses required in your major, you may be accepted into the Engineering Technology Foundations Track. This enables you to spread the increased course load over an additional year, while simultaneously taking courses in your chosen major.

  • Test First - This category is similar to Provisional Acceptance, except that the Admissions Office believes there is insufficient information on which to base a decision. The applicant is asked to take the Vermont Tech Placement Tests before a decision can be made.

  • Admissions Denied - A denial of admission is a decision we reach reluctantly, but one that we believe to be in your best interest. The College's commitment is to support your academic success. Our decision is not a reflection on your ability, but on our ability to provide the level of support we believe you would need to succeed at Vermont Tech, given your academic preparedness to date.

Placement Testing

The majority of applicants to Vermont Tech are required to take the Vermont Tech Placement Tests, also known as the Accuplacer. The Accuplacer tests a student's mathematics and writing abilities.

The Accuplacers are a valuable tool intended to give students their best opportunity to succeed academically in their chosen major.

A Placement Committee consisting of faculty and staff from various departments review each student's testing results to guide decisions on the student's admission status and the course sequence most appropriate for each applicant admitted. These decisions are then discussed fully with each applicant as a part of the counseling process after the tests are completed.

Examples of placement decisions might include:
  • regular two or four-year courses

  • honors level course placement

  • remedial courses, which may or may not include the Three-Year Option
