Dress Code/Appearance in Clinical Settings

Interpretation of the dress code policy is at the discretion of the instructor. Students failing to meet these guidelines for appearance in clinical settings will be sent off duty.  If the situation cannot be rectified on-site, the student will be sent home for the day.  This absence will be counted as a clinical absence and cannot be made up. 

  1. Beards and moustaches are allowed, but must be kept trimmed.  Beards must be contoured closely with the face.  At the discretion of the instructor, the student may be asked to wear a beard bag if there is concern for infection control.
  2. Hair must be confined off the collar and away from the face at all times.  There shall be no ornamentation in the hair except to help keep it off the collar and away from the face.  If longer hair needs to be confined, it should not be ostentatious.
  3. Uniforms must be pressed, neat, and clean.
  4. The only jewelry allowed is a smooth ring with no stones and, in some clinical areas, small, single, stud type earrings.  Appropriateness of such is at the instructor's discretion.
  5. Nails must be kept short, with no nail polish.
  6. Students must refrain from wearing perfumes or using scented lotions or hair products to the clinical setting.  Cosmetics should be used in moderation.
  7. When in a clinical setting, but not in uniform, students must wear their nametags and a lab coat at all times, except in Dental Hygiene, which does not require nametags.
  8. The mill of all clothing must be sufficient that undergarments do not show.

Additionally, nursing students must meet this definition of a complete uniform:
  1. Skirts no shorter than mid-knee; or regulation color pants a minimum of two and a maximum of three inches from the floor.
  2. School uniform shirt.
  3. A student name identification badge must be worn anytime the student is in the clinical area.
  4. Clean white shoes, laces, socks and plain white stockings.  White socks may only be worn with pant style uniform. Note, clinical agency requirements may apply.
  5. Bandage scissors.
  6. Small notebook and a pen with BLACK ink.
  7. A watch calibrated to count seconds.
  8. A stethoscope.
Dental Hygiene students must also meet these requirements:
Students are expected to purchase regulation scrubs, over-garments, socks, shoes and an instrument kit prior the start of the first semester.
