Allow Us to Introduce: Eliza WakefieldClass of 2011
Eliza was born in St. Johnsbury, VT but has lived in Danville, VT all of her life. She traveled around the country throughout her youth; however, she never has found an interest to replace her dream of working with horses.
Leo, a Quarter horse owned by a neighbor, was Eliza's first and best equine friend. Eliza spent every spare moment for four years with Leo, providing all of his care. When his owner decided to put him down to save him from suffering through another Vermont winter in his old age, Eliza worked hard to successfully prepare him for the winter. Because of his dramatically improved condition, Leo's owner changed her mind, and Leo lived for many more years, thanks to Eliza's care and concern. Her experience with Leo turned into plans for a career: Eliza wants to help abused and neglected horses who need to find caring homes
Drawn to Vermont Tech because of the Equine Studies Program and the college's attention to individuals, Eliza also had the goal of helping to strengthen the new women's soccer program-and she certainly did that, with a strong performance in the fall season. She also purchased her first rescue horse this fall: he is a black 9 year old Thoroughbred who was starved before coming to the farm where Eliza first saw him. As she says, "while I am helping him, he is helping me discover my dream."
