Vermont Technical College and GlobalFoundries announced today that Governor Phil Scott will be attending and speaking at a press conference to announce the launch of their GlobalFoundries Technician Program on March 22, 2019. The press conference will begin at 11:00am with opening remarks by the Governor, followed by Vermont Tech President Patricia Moulton and GlobalFoundries’ Senior Location Executive Dale Miller. A representative from Senator Bernie Sander’s office will also be in attendance as the organizations detail the new workforce development opportunity for Vermonters to gain a credential of value while employed and earning a salary. This opportunity expands access to post-secondary training for high school graduates through this innovative public-private partnership between Vermont Tech and GlobalFoundries.

“Only 1 percent of jobs created since the Great Recession in 2008 require only a high school diploma,” says President Moulton, citing research by the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce. “We need to give more access to higher education for Vermont citizens to be prepared for today’s and tomorrow’s workforce. It’s part of Vermont Tech’s responsibility as a public institution to find ways to make that possible,” she concludes.

“GlobalFoundries is invested in Vermont and our facility here. We currently have an urgent need for more skilled technicians and expanding our partnership with Vermont Tech to include this apprenticeship program is an excellent way for us to create a pipeline of career-ready employees for both our near term and longer term needs,” says Dale Miller, Senior Location Executive with GlobalFoundries.

The apprenticeship program is open to high school graduates with demonstrated technical aptitude and high scholastic accomplishments inside and outside the classroom. The program cost of $5,250 per year is free to participants while they earn $18.50-$20.80 an hour, based on shift differential. Employees who complete the apprenticeship program will earn credits toward their associate degree, which can also be completed at Vermont Tech while working full-time with GlobalFoundries using tuition reimbursement benefits.
