The Center for Sustainable Practices provides educational opportunities that explore sustainability in ways that are consistent with Vermont Technical College's mission, focus on applied research and emphasis on experiential learning.
The CSP has three programmatic components to its work:
- Informing policy
- Affecting academic study, and
- Training the workforce
It accomplishes its mission by developing programs, creating projects, demonstrating new concepts and technologies, bringing physical and intellectual resources to our campuses, and engaging internal and external constituencies in discussions designed to explore the question of "What constitutes a sustainable practice?"
This approach is both consistent with and helps to support the Vermont Tech belief that an educated person assumes responsibility for his/her own learning, for career preparation and citizenship, and is someone who consistently strives to reach their full potential, demonstrates curiosity, engages in critical thinking, communicates effectively, is globally aware, and is civically engaged.
The Center for Sustainable practices:
- Brings environmental, social and economic resources to campus to enhance the college's learning environment and its practice of sustainability;
- Connects with academic programs to provide learning opportunities and experiential projects for students;
- Sponsors symposia, lectures, discussion courses, and other opportunities that bring faculty, students, staff and the community together to consider and experience sustainability;
- Provides certificate training in sustainable practices that can be combined with a variety of the College's majors, stand as independent professional development opportunities for Vermont Tech graduates and others in the workforce, and help develop green skill sets of those who seek green jobs;
- Connects the College with its neighboring residents, businesses and institutions, teaching through experience, the benefits of sustainable community values and good citizenship through community-oriented programming and outreach;
- Coordinates with its sister campuses in the Vermont state college system to enhance campus sustainability efforts, create economies in sustainable undertakings, and spread knowledge about sustainability; and
- Participate in state, regional and national sustainability organizations and program initiatives in order to influence the discipline and derive a benefit for the College from its contacts and experiences.
